1. Overview
The Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology is one of the leading scientific units in Mongolia conducting education and research in the fields of groundwater studies, engineering geology, geotechnics, and geoecology.
Since 1973, the department has been training specialists in hydrogeology and engineering geology. Over the decades, it has educated hundreds of engineers and researchers who now contribute to Mongolia’s groundwater resources studies, mining industry, construction, and infrastructure development.
The department integrates education with scientific research and is committed to supporting sustainable groundwater resource management, ensuring the safety of engineering structures, and promoting environmental sustainability.
2. Education Programs
The department offers the following degree programs.
Bachelor’s Programs
- Hydrogeology
- Engineering Geology and Geotechnics
Master’s Programs
- Hydrogeology
- Engineering Geology and Geotechnics
- Geoecology
Doctoral Programs
- Hydrogeology
- Engineering Geology
- Geoecology
The academic programs provide practice-oriented education integrating modern approaches such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), hydrogeochemistry, groundwater modeling, engineering geological investigations, geotechnical assessment, and environmental research methods.
3. Research Areas
The department conducts research in the fields of groundwater, engineering geology, geotechnics, and geoecology, including:
- Groundwater exploration and resource assessment
- Groundwater quality and contamination studies
- Hydrogeochemistry and environmental isotope research
- Groundwater modeling and resource evaluation
- Engineering geology and geotechnical studies for infrastructure development
- Mining hydrogeology and geotechnical investigations
- Geological hazards and risk assessment
- Geoenvironmental and ecological studies
These research activities contribute to the development of science-based solutions for water resource management, infrastructure safety, sustainable mining, agricultural sustainability, and environmental protection.
4. Research and Collaboration
The department collaborates with national and international universities, research institutions, and organizations through joint research projects, academic exchanges, and student mobility programs.
In addition, the department works closely with governmental and private sector organizations in areas such as groundwater resource studies, mine water management, engineering geology, and geoenvironmental research, contributing to the development of Mongolia’s geoscience sector.
5. Graduates and Professional Contribution
Since its establishment, the department has graduated approximately 700 engineers, more than 120 master’s degree holders, and 19 PhD graduates. Many of these alumni are actively contributing to Mongolia’s groundwater research, mining sector, construction and infrastructure development, and environmental protection.
